“It’s not access to hospitals that lead to a healthy population, but rather the environment and people we surround ourselves with,” said former Senator Bill Frist, M.D. in his latest episode of the “A Second Opinion\u201d podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a recent visit for the 2020 Lake Nona Impact Forum<\/a>, Senator Frist sat down to interview some of the minds behind our master-planned community and a resident who has found better quality of life in Lake Nona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The former Senate Majority Leader is also a nationally-acclaimed heart and lung transplant surgeon whose \u201cA Second Opinion\u201d podcast explores innovative improvements to health and health care in communities across the U.S.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt feels like it\u2019s a small town,\u201d said Lake Nona resident Natalia Foote who moved here with her family in 2015. \u201cIt lived up to every expectation I had. I came in wanting a sense of community – for my boys to have friends, for me to have friends and a sense of general health and wellbeing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Health and wellbeing go hand-in-hand with education, technology and science as essential ingredients in Lake Nona\u2019s design. From Medical City to our parks and recreational spaces, the episode explores the impact of wellbeing across a variety of developments in Lake Nona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe, in essence, are place makers.\u201d said Jim Zboril, Senior Managing Director at Tavistock, the Lake Nona developer. On the podcast, Zboril takes the audience back to the early stages of planning Lake Nona including the formation of the University of Central Florida College of Medicine<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI knew we could build a medical school here,\u201d said Dr. Deborah German, founding dean of the UCF College of Medicine. On her own, Dr. German gathered a 68-member committee to help create the curriculum for the first-class medical school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
