ORLANDO, Fla. \u2013 (Sept. 18, 2019)<\/strong> \u2013 Today, the region\u2019s first autonomous shuttles are on the road in Lake Nona. Orlando\u2019s fastest-growing community has two fully electric, driverless shuttles in service that operate daily on an inaugural fixed route connecting Lake Nona Town Center with the neighborhood village center in Laureate Park. Together, with mobility solutions provider Beep and shuttle manufacturer NAVYA, Lake Nona\u2019s autonomous shuttles are setting the standard for new mobility technology in the region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOver\nthe last several years, we have worked with our public and private partners to\nestablish Orlando as a \u201cfuture-ready\u201d city,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy\nDyer. \u201cTavistock shares our passion for innovation, technology, and sustainability.\nWith today\u2019s launch of Beep\u2019s autonomous shuttle service in Lake Nona, we\ncelebrate their investment in our community and the expansion of safe,\nefficient, environmentally-friendly transportation options in Central Florida.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lake\nNona\u2019s shuttles each hold up to 10 passengers and will operate at a maximum\nspeed of 15 mph as part of the pilot program. The shuttles will operate daily\nfrom 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. and 6 – 10 p.m. though hours may change as the shuttles\nbecome more integrated with traffic flow. Eventually, the plan is to increase\nthe number of shuttles and expand the route network in the future. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In\naddition to supporting improved mobility in Central Florida, Lake Nona\u2019s new autonomous\nshuttle service supports the state\u2019s ambitions to become a national leader in\nautonomous vehicle testing. Florida recently passed legislation to help\ncultivate the autonomous vehicle sector by bringing more businesses to the\nstate for autonomous testing. Lake Nona, Beep, and NAVYA join a growing list of\npublic and private companies exploring innovative solutions to improve\nconnectivity within this community and beyond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Debuting\nCentral Florida\u2019s first autonomous shuttles further demonstrates Lake Nona\u2019s commitment\nto testing new technology within its living lab where companies, organizations, and\nentrepreneurs convene to explore new trends and ideas. From a first-of-its-kind\npartnership with the public school system and YMCA to a longitudinal health\nstudy for residents, and now with providing the region\u2019s first driverless\nshuttles, Lake Nona continues to be a model of what a smart and connected\ncommunity can accomplish. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier\nthis year, the two industry leaders announced an innovative development\npartnership for shared mobility and autonomous vehicle research. The\nshuttles are monitored in Beep\u2019s headquarters and central command center\nlocated in Lake Nona Town Center. The\ncommand center\u2019s sophisticated system uses the latest technology to monitor the\nmovement and operation of each shuttle providing valuable data that will\ncontinually optimize vehicle performance. Beep\u2019s mobility solution includes\nintegration of a leading fleet orchestration platform from technology partner\nBestmile that enables Beep to continually monitor for the safety and security\nof riders. Additionally, Bestmile optimizes all aspects of shuttle performance,\nincluding vehicle maintenance and service delivery, as well as data analytics\nand machine learning for continuous improvement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Each autonomous shuttle is equipped with interior\nand exterior cameras and\nuses effective guidance and detection systems while also optimizing navigation\nand safety features. The Beep command\ncenter can also communicate with the on-board shuttle attendant at any time. Though\nthe shuttles are driverless, a Beep shuttle attendant will be on the shuttle at\nall times during operation to ensure riders have a pleasant and safe\nexperience. In May of this year, Beep and NAVYA hosted a\nfirst-of-its-kind training for nearly 100 emergency personnel from both Orange\nCounty and City of Orlando fire rescue, EMT, and police departments. The\ntraining taught the attendees how to interact with the vehicle in emergency\nsituations and included a hands-on session on how to drive the vehicle manually\nif needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
